Reviews - What do our customers think?
An eagle for Blackston and his readers  May 6, 2008
After straying away from his typical "Christian guys confused by relationships" pattern with A Pagan's Nightmare Ray Blackston returns to that fertile ground with his latest novel. Centering on Chris Hackett, the owner and golf pro at Hack's Driving Range, the novel gets back to what Blackston does best--put guys in situations where they have no clues.

In this case, it's Chris' blindly enlisting for a seminar on communication between men and women and meeting Molly, a political reporter who throws him for a proverbial loop. Following Molly's advice, Chris opens up nights for political parties to come out and take out thier frustration on their political opposites at his driving range. They prove wildly successful and soon gain Chris local and national prominence.

Unlike most contemporary Christian novels, the strength of Blackston's stories is that he has authentic characters who he puts on authentic journeys. Nothing feels forced or contrived about Chris' story and even when Chris gets on the peaks and valleys that come with any journey through life, his reaction to it still feels authentic. And while Chris does learn from both extremes, the writing never feels forced or preachy, unlike a great many other writers in the contemporary Christian genre.

The novel is also peppered with the usual eccentrics that Blackston relishes.

This is a fun, charming and entertaining novel that firmly puts Blackston in the upper echelions of contemporary Christian writers. Par for the Course is Blackston's best book since his initial offering Flabbergasted.

And if you're a fan of his novels, you'll see a few cameos of characters from other books sprinkled in here, adding to the enjoyment and delight of long-time readers.

Bogeys and birdies and sand traps, oh my!  Apr 17, 2008

As the owner of a golfing center, Chris Hack specializes in treating his customers right. This includes personalize training time and also Happy Hour where one can release frustration by whacking a golf cart driven by Chris's assistant who hurls insults at you. One day a girl name Molly stops by and sees potential in Chris's golfing range in the political world involving elections. Soon business is booming as the publicity from the politicians make Chris's place a household name. However someone isn't too happy with all the holes in one Chris is getting. Will Chris be able to save his business and get the girl?

I am going to admit this. I am NOT a golf fan. I don't know anything about golf other than the goal is to get a ball into a hole. Is it a real sport? I mean, it's not in the Olympics. I suck at miniature golf too. I never can get it through the windmill course. Therefore I learned quite a bit more about what Tiger Woods does for a living while reading this book. This is by far one of the most hilarious books I have read this year. I could stop laughing while reading this book. Plus at the same time I kept thinking, wow this author is pushing the "Christian fiction" envelope with discussions of politics AND religion! Seriously it's really quite edgy the way the book allows for the attacks of both Democrats and Republicans. The feminist meeting which Chris attends was wonderfully written along with the battle of the sexes golf match. I do love the idea of whacking the golf cart with Cack hacking insults at the customers. I'd pay money to hit him as well! I also enjoyed how this book actually uses real political figures and not make up fake presidents or other top government officials. It's more fun to use the actual characters and jokingly make them larger than life. A lot of the issues dealt with this book really makes you think though about politicians, their tactics and elections. There's also a touch of mystery within the story as well. Chris and Molly are great characters who bring a hoot throughout the book. The study guide "questions" at the end will bring more laughs to the table. This is a great book to take on the lighter side of the election year this year. Another winner for Blackston!

More Fun than a Bucket of Balls  Apr 7, 2008
I'm not a big golf fan. Ha. I don't even get the game though I was actually on my high school golf team for a week. But that's a whole nother story. And, no way can I tell it like Ray Blackston could.

I don't much care for political maneuvering either. So you'd think this would not be a book high on my list of recommended reads.

Ray Blackston can tell a heck of a story. I love his voice. Par is first person lad-lit in a charming, almost ADD meandering walk through poor Chris Hackett's life as he encounters drama, crisis and women.

My husband picked up Par within hours of its arrival at the house. He devoured it and asked if I had any more Blackston books. I produced Flabbergasted and Pagan's Nightmare from the bookshelf which he then devoured as well. Did I mention that he laughed out loud? He did, at very annoying times while I was trying to sleep. Based on his response, I had high expectations when I finally got my hands on Par. I was not disappointed.

If you love quirk, charm and off-the-wall humor with a dash of sweetness, I think you'll love Par. I did.

Blackston Birdies Another Book  Apr 7, 2008
Since the introduction of his Southern-spun, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek style, Ray Blackston has treated readers with consistent entertainment. While each of his novels provides laughs, memorable characters, and glimpses of wisdom, they also maintain freshness due to their varied settings. We've visited Atlantic shorelines, jaunted across the Australian outback, and now, in "Par for the Course," we tee up at a golf range in Charleston, South Carolina.

Chris Hackett is our single, entrepreneurial, club-swinging hero. Quickly, he is pulled into male-female squabbles when he agrees to an ill-advised bet with a local feminist. Even as his troubles mount, he finds time to water a blossoming friendship with an attractive political analyst named Molly. She gives him an idea that results in a spike of income for the range, then ends in disaster. An arsonist's actions threaten all that Chris has been working toward.

"Par for the Course" is laid out nicely, with witty quips provided at the beginning of each chapter. The story moves along with few delays, hitting the fairway on nearly every chapter, and rolling in putts. Despite a few inconsistencies involving police suspicion of Chris and a weak motive for the arsonist's visit to Chris' home, "Par for the Course" is a readable, fun book. It takes swipes at the political and dating processes in light-hearted ways. It makes you smile.

Blackston has birdied yet another book. Sign me up now for a tee-time with his next effort.

A little sunshine, a little white nemesis, a little politics...  Mar 20, 2008
One more time Mr. Blackston has created a story that hits home with a humorous story that resonates with Biblical principles.

Chris Hackett, owner of Hackett's Golf Learning Center in SC, has found the perfect vocation. He doesn't live an exhorbitant lifestyle, but appears to be enjoying a reasonable existence giving golf lessons to a wide range of novices, including a political analyst whom he finds attractive. All seems to be well until he decides to attend a class to learn about the opposite sex. Arriving late, he discovers that he's the only male in a room of women. The speaker rants about Adam not stepping up to the plate in the Garden and comes across as quite the feminist. Competive natures often get the best of us, and it's not entirely different for Chris as he challenges the speaker to golf. A little naive, he still comes out the better for the challenge with Cack, his lone employee/caddy supporting him along the way.

When one of his students suggests some ways to drum up some business, he goes along with it, not contemplating for any real length of time, the consequences. Add that said student is the lovely political analyst and the waters can get a little muddied.

Some surprising twists only added to the experience. The quirky repartee between the characters (even some with cameo roles from previous adventures) had me turning page after page until I reached the end. Having taken a few golf lessons myself, I had complete appreciation for the frustration of those at the mat trying to "Whack the Cack"!

Does he "get the girl" in the end? Sign up for a few golf lessons and discover for yourself!

Thanks for another great read!
