This is a must have book. The stories are inspirational. I bought 7 and gave all away.
Must be a Spirit filled Christian to wholly understand this book. Sep 27, 2006
Although I do not agree with every single teaching in this book, it is a great testimony of one man's journey to draw closer to Jesus. It is full of spiritual foundational building blocks that are essential for a successful and fulfilling walk with Christ. As a missionary with almost 40 years on the foreign mission field, I have lived by the same basic spiritual lessons taught in this book and can share many similar testimonies which prove that this is sound doctrine and firmly based in scripture and is the ultimate will of God for all Christians attain to. As I read through these reviews I found a negative review by, Ron "Truthdetective", that totally missed the whole point of this book. Ron felt that the book was saying that we should praise God for all the evil in the world. Obviously, Ron is not a spirit filled Christian and that is why he missed the point. Ron dismisses the miraculous personal testimonies of God's power working in people lives through praise because he does not believe God still does miracles today. This is evident in his statement when he says "modern testimonials" because he believes that God did do miracles in the past but has ceased to do them in modern times. People like Ron hate this book because it directly contradicts everything they believe and because the book offers real unquestionably testimonies to back up what the book is saying. The most irritating thing about this book, to people like Ron, is that, as Merlin clearly illustrates, even though he had been through bible school and seminary and had wholly devoted himself to understanding the bible, he understood nothing until he was filled with the Holy Spirit. In this book, Merlin, shows that he was a person exactly like Ron "Truthdetective", that was obsessed with searching scripture and understanding the truth. And just like Ron, he ridiculed and openly mocked spirit filled Christians as foolish and phony. But of course, this all changed when he himself was filled with Holy Spirit. After which he dismissed all of his former beliefs and let the Holy Spirit be his teacher. This is the true foundation of the Christian walk and is entirely based in scripture. Jesus said in John 14:25-26 " These things have I spoken unto you, while yet abiding with you. But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you."
If you are a Spirit filled Christian going through a trial and need encouragement, then you should read this book. If you are a lost person that has been ravaged by the consequences of your bad choices in life and are searching for truth and meaning, then you should read this book. If your are a hard-shell, bible thumping, religious person that has been indoctrinated to believe that the baptism of the Holy Spirit and miracles are not for us today, then get down on your knees right now and ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit, and then read this book. Otherwise you are not going to understand it, just like Ron.
It is good to praise the Lord Jul 24, 2006
Autobiography of an army chaplain; very easy and interesting to read. One of the things that Carothers has discovered in his spiritual journey is to praise God in all circumstances.
'Praising Him is not something we do because we feel good; rather it is an act of obedience.... When we persist in it, somehow the power of God is released into us and into the situation, first in a trickle perhaps, but later in a growing stream that finally floods us and washes away the old hurts and scars' (p.80).
Inspiring. Powerful. Uplifting. Joyous. Feb 19, 2006
"Prison to Praise" is an uplifting, inspirational story of Merlin Carothers and his walk of faith during his career as a U.S. Army chaplain. But more than that, it the inspiring story of an ordinary man used by God in extraordinary ways.
Carothers doesn't sugar coat the truth or his own life: he was a thief, deserter, and criminal before finding saving grace that set him toward his destiny. In him, we see ourselves; failings and fallings as well as redemption.
He discovered important truths contained in the Bible about salvation, filling of the Holy Spirit, and the power of God's Word. He also discovered for himself and many others the key to answered prayer: thankfulness and praise. Exercising faith in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:
"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you!"
Carothers discovered a key to unlocking the power of God in our lives. Ministering on the strength and promise of this word, he has helped countless people in their walks of faith. He has helped mountains to be moved.
This book is a blessing to believers and a bright light to those looking for truth and a way home to the Father.
This is a Phony Formula Jan 7, 2006
I am duplicating a review I originally wrote for "Power in Praise", which teaches this same doctrine. I have read both these books many years ago and am thoroughly familiar with this strange teaching.
Please, fellow Christians, be as the noble Bereans who examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true!(Acts 17) This is one of the first of many "faith formula" teachings and books that have plagued the church of God for the past thirty years.
We can use our common sense and some careful Bible interpretation to find that this doctrine is foolish. There is a BIG difference between trusting and praising God IN difficult circumstances, and praising God FOR absolutely everything: good, bad, sin, and all circumstances. This is so obviously fanatical and senseless. This creates a false picture of our Savior and Heavenly Father as some evil tyrant, and we as his pawns. God is all-powerful and has had to ALLOW many kinds of sin and sometimes great degrees if evil in this world because of the curse upon this world brought about by Adam's sin and the continued sins of mankind (see Romans 5). But it is senseless to praise Him FOR sin or evil. God hates sin and evil, and the Bible is full of clear teaching about it (see Psalms 5, James 1, etc.)
The main texts of Brother Carothers doctrine are I Thessalonians 5:18, "In everything give thanks..."; Ephesians 5:20, "Always giving thanks for all things..."; and Romans 8:28, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good..." He uses these passages to teach in this book, and in all his others, that "we should PRAISE GOD FOR EVERYTHING, since everything ultimately is God's will for us and will be for our spiritual benefit. This is NOT some new special revelation from God, as he implies over and over in the book. Rather it is a ridicuous idea that contradicts balanced scriptural truth. This "word of faith-type formula" makes our holy, loving God look awful.
In this book the scripture is twisted to fit the doctrine and the modern testimonials are used to support the absurd practices. You won't find any Biblical stories with saints praising God FOR sin or evil. Throughout the Psalms, for example, we see David calling upon God for help, not praising Him FOR evil, but praising Him for being faithful and loving (see Psalm 13, 16, 18 etc.) We see the saints in Hebrews 11 commended for their FAITH, because, despite suffering and being persecuted, they trusted in the goodness of God, who had made to them (as He has to us) His very great and precious promises of eternal love and deliverance.
God has allowed and continues to ALLOW Christians to suffer and be matured through life's problems (e.g.: Acts 6-8, Hebrew 10-12, James 1, I Peter 1 and 4, etc.), but we are NEVER called to focus on sin, persecution, or any evil and praise God FOR it as if it were "Good". Rather, we are to focus our faith on God, our loving Father (Psalm 25:15 etc.), and fix our eyes on our Lord Jesus Christ,"...the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross..." (Hebrews 12:2).
