A holiday tale relates the story of a thirteen-year-old boy whose final gift from his mother, a sweater, is scorned in favor of more expensive gifts before a tragic car accident ends the mother's life.Publishers Description
If You Could Change Your Life by Reversing Your Biggest Regrets, Sorrows and Mistakes...Would You?
#1 "New York Times" bestselling author and renowned radio and television host Glenn Beck delivers an instant holiday classic about boyhood memories, wrenching life lessons, and the true meaning of the gifts we give to one another in love.
"We weren't wealthy, we weren't poor -- we just were. We never wanted for anything, except maybe more time together...."
When Eddie was twelve years old, all he wanted for Christmas was a bike. Although his life had gotten harder -- and money tighter -- since his father died and the family bakery closed...Eddie dreamed that "somehow" his mother would find a way to have his dream bike gleaming beside their modest Christmas tree that magical morning.
What he got from her instead was a sweater. ""A stupid, handmade, ugly sweater"" that young Eddie left in a crumpled ball in the corner of his room.
Scarred deeply by the realization that kids don't always get what they want, and too young to understand that he already owned life's most valuable treasures, that Christmas morning was the beginning of Eddie's dark and painful journey on the road to manhood. It will take wrestling with himself, his faith, and his family -- and the guidance of a mysterious neighbor named Russell -- to help Eddie find his path through the storm clouds of life and finally see the real significance of that simple gift his mother had crafted by hand with love in her heart.
Based on a deeply personal true story, "The Christmas Sweater" is a warm and poignant tale of family, faith and forgiveness that offers us a glimpse of our own lives -- while also making us question if we really know what's most important in them.

A Lesson in Redemption Jan 18, 2010
When I picked up this book to read it, I wasn't expecting very much more than a simple, touching read for the holiday season. I have enjoyed Glenn Beck's other writings and his radio and television shows, and I set about reading this book with some hope for insight into the author's character.
So I wasn't reading this book with some hope of a political, social or religious message. What I wanted, in truth, was a book with which I could relax and settle in on a winter's night.
And Glenn Beck delivered beautifully.
What I liked most about this book was the fact that I could see myself in the main character of Eddie. I was able to relate to the feeling of "deserving" that thing which we most want (especially at a time like Christmas) and when I studied Eddie I realized, with some self-disdain, that I had also behaved badly, as so many of us have.
What was disappointing for me was the fact that I was hoping to connect with Glenn Beck on a much deeper and more personal level. I thought the book would be more autobiographical than it was, and as it turns out, there are only two themes in the book which carry throughout as having a genuine personal origin for Glenn Beck.
For all that being said, this book has received a fair number of reviews, both in the positive and the negative. I know and understand the tendency to simply mark an item 5 stars or 1 star. Few people rate books somewhere in between. Those books I love, for me, are always a four. It's hard to give a book a one or a five, with only favorites at a five and disasters at a 1.
I'd have to say that this book is a 4 for me, since I would readily pass it on to others. I got something out of this book: a profound and engaging desire to rediscover my authentic Self. That was the gift that I got out of this book, and I would love to see others receive such a wonderful gift as well.
I don't believe that you must like or agree with Glenn Beck (or his politics) in order to enjoy this book, and liking Glenn Beck (or his politics) is no guarantee that you will enjoy The Christmas Sweater. My advice is to read it without expectations, and see what comes out of the book for you. This is an easy, simple and refreshing read.
I'm glad I bought the book.
Amazing Jan 11, 2010
A book I did not want to put down. It pulled me in and held me captive. A very tender, compelling and inspirational story. It reveals a beautiful message that everyone should hear. I chose to read it to my children as well, and they beg me to keep reading. I wouldn't pass this one by.
Worthy of praise. Jan 11, 2010
As I read this book, I was reminded of many similarities between the main character and myself (bread bags, you will know what I mean if you choose to read the book). It is a reminder of the meaning and idea behind the Christmas holiday, and of how materialistic some can be. The book is not perfect. I found a typo or two. But the meaning and intent of the story are based in a good conscience effort to bring good feelings and purpose to our existence and of how we treat one another. Don't expect this to be an autobiographical account. It was never intended to be. Some of the ideas are autobiographical, and yet others are not and are totally made up. Mr. Beck states this in the book.
I will not give away any of the story. If you want that type of review, just look at the one star reviews probably more based in anger at what they see as a political freak and/or nutjob making a success out of spouting traditional values.
In my opinion, the book is short. Makes a point about correcting your biggest mistakes in life. If you could do it. Correct your mistakes... Would you?
The Christmas Sweater Jan 8, 2010
Reminded me of the Christmas Story movie. all seen through the eyes of a child. A very unique storyline with a twist.
Engaging, short, but just ok for me... Jan 8, 2010
I am a fan of Glenn Beck and did preview this book on Kindle before reading. The prose and story is engaging enough but somewhere about 1/2 way through I lost interest in the main character's struggle and exactly what was going on between him and his grandparents. The dialogue just wasn't there. It all went on a little too long, was too dramatic and the symbolism was a little too much for me. The ending was a nice suprise though. The book was a quick read...maybe 2 hours? Not sure I'd want to spend $9.99 for a two hour read again.
