Publishers Description
A nostalgic collection of more than 120 Bible stories and art taken from Taylor's Bible Story Book and The Living Bible Story Book. Not only does "Classic Bible Storybook" present the truths of the Bible in language that is understandable to kids, it will also generate fond memories for parents and grandparents who remember the popular Hook art and the stories written by Ken Taylor. The stories sound like they are being told by a kind grandfather to his grandchildren. Each story has 3 or 4 comprehension questions to help children's understanding of Biblical concepts. Reading/hearing these stories will help young ones love stories of the Bible and may help adults fall in love again with God's Word. About the author: Kenneth N. Taylor is best known as the translator of "The Living Bible" and founder of Tyndale House Publishers, but his first renown was as a writer of children's books. Dr. Taylor and his wife Margaret raised 10 children, and his early books were written for use in the family's daily devotions. The manuscripts were ready for publication only when they passed the scrutiny of those ten critics. Dr. Taylor's books have been read to three generations around the world and have shaped the faith of many believers. All of his work pointed to his mission: to help all people understand the Word of God and experience its power at work in their lives. Dr. Taylor believed that it was important for the illustrations in his books to make the words come to life. Just as the words were easy for children to understand, so were the illustrations. He especially appreciated Richard and Frances Hook for their realistic, accurate portrayal of biblical scenes along with sweet pictures of children. Their illustrations, along with Dr. Taylor's stories, can easily form the basis for many lively family discussions about the Bible.

Wonderful memories to be had.  May 21, 2009
The Classic Bible Storybook by Kenneth N. Taylor and published by Tyndale is a hard covered book with more than 120 stories from the Bible. The beautiful illustrations one finds in this storybook are done by Richard and Franci Hook. Kenneth Taylor was a dad to 10 children and wanted his children to be able to understand Biblical truths and sought to find a way to make that a reality. He has written many other books for children and is also responsible for what later became the New Living Translation of the Bible.

This storybook of Bible stories has beautiful illustrations done both in color and black and white. The drawings are realistic in nature and add the ability for children to feel connected to the Biblical characters they read about. The illustrations will impress even the oldest of adults down the youngest of children - I know my husband and I were impressed as was my youngest who is 2! The care taken by the illustrators really can be felt to come through the pages as you read the stories.

There are 68 Old Testament Bible stories and 53 New Testament Bible stories. Each story gives the Scripture that relates back to the Bible as well as one or two illustrations to go along with that story. The stories are engaging, as all Bible stories should be, and are simple enough the young will understand but detailed enough that the older children will not be bored by simplistic language. Following each story are comprehension questions that the parent can go over with their child(ren) to ensure a good understanding of the Bible story they were just read. The questions can have simple answers for the young child but also give a chance for an older child to give more detailed answers as they grow in the Word.

Overall, this is a wonderful children's storybook full of Truth and Wisdom and will enable children to grasp Biblical truths on their level until they can move on to a regular Bible for more intense study. My oldest enjoys pulling this off the shelf and reading and answering the questions by herself. This could also be used for family devotions or to teach Biblical history for the homeschooling family. There are so many ways to use this Classic Bible Storybook and your family will enjoy it and as well as it's made it could very well became a treasured family heirloom.
Great Book for Kids!  Apr 2, 2009
I had a book similar to this when I was a child and some of my fondest memories are times when my parents would read to me from it. This book will help me create similar memories with my kids. The book is filled with beautiful illustrations, Bible stories (of course) and also questions to help parents interact and start meaningful conversations with their children.

One specific thing I liked about the book is that the illistrations are realistic and not cartoonish. It's hard enough to explain to kids that the stories in the Bible are real when they are so used to fairy tales and so a book like this helps bring the stories to life and make them believable.
A New Beloved Book  Apr 2, 2009
The Classic Bible Storybook by Kenneth N. Taylor is such a precious book. My husband and I have enjoyed reading the beautiful stories aloud to our children at bedtime. The book itself is a beautiful hardback that many parents will want to add to their "forever" collection.

The stories in this book are very concise. Most are 2-3 pages long. The Bible stories are well-written and accurate. This is very important to us because we don't like Bible books that add events to the story to make them exciting for children. We believe the original story can captivate our children, and we appreciate Kenneth Taylor's method.

There are more than 120 stories included. Each story has review questions to help lead a discussion with the children about what they have learned. I like using the questions because my children often glean truth from the stories that I would never have thought possible. The questions help me to draw out their hearts as we talk about our Lord.

The illustrations in the Classic Bible Storybook are wonderful. Each page is given an antiqued look. There are many beautiful color illustrations of the stories and my children love looking at them as we read together.

I think this book is a wonderful companion to our Bible studies. I am thankful to have it, and the Classic Bible Storybook has become a favorite in our home. I am sure in a few years it will show the signs of being well-loved.
Excellent Children's Bible Storybook  Mar 19, 2009
This beautifully illustrated book contains over 100 Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments. Both the children (ages 5 and 8) and I enjoyed reading from this Bible storybook as part of bedtime ritual.

The Classic Bible Storybook has several unique features that made it a big hit with our family:

* Warm, charming, realistic illustrations. We find that some modern Bibles with their cartoon-like illustrations are distracting and perplexing. For me, unrealistic, silly or exaggerated illustrations subtly convey a message that undermines the holiness of the Bible.
* The 121 Bible stories include some that are not commonly found in children's Bible story books. Job, Paul's Epistles and Revelation are included in the book's material at a level that children can easily understand.
* Short review questions, usually 3 or 4 of them, are featured after each story to aid in comprehension and retention of the important elements of each story. My children especially love this feature and each tries to answer as fast as he or she can, game-show style, to see who can answer first. Mom is gratified because she can tell that the kids are listening carefully to the story and the kids have fun.
* Not too "dumb-downed". The stories often use the same language found in the Bible and they avoid irreverent paraphrases. At the same time, the language used is certainly not too difficult for most children and this level gives the children an opportunity to ask questions when they do not understand something, helping them to learn.

Kenneth Taylor is a gifted writer of Bible stories for children and his stories have been read to three generations of children around the world, including his own ten children.

I believe the Classic Bible Storybook is a book that you and your children or grandchildren will enjoy reading over and over for years. We continue to enjoy it nightly. It would make a wonderful Easter gift or surprise in a child's Easter basket.

Torough Excellence for Early Grade Kids  Mar 15, 2009
One common criticism of children's Bibles is they tend to not give a good overall picture of what the Bible is really about; yes, there are many stories in the Bible, but they have a common element running through them: Jesus. Recently, a few children's Bibles have done a good job of correcting this, including The Jesus Storybook Bible and The Big Picture Bible. But before either of those books were published, there were children's Bibles by Kenneth N. Taylor.

Taylor was a prolific children's book author, the translator of The Living Bible, and founder of Tyndale House Publishers. In his two books Bible Story Book and The Living Bible Storybook (now out of print), he strove to accurately tell Bible stories in brief sections, sometimes explaining how Jesus fit in - even with Old Testament stories. Today, Tyndale combined what they feel are the best of both books to create Classic Bible Storybook.

The first thing you may notice when you pick up this book is that it includes many stories rarely included in children's Bibles, including the story of the original Passover, the story of manna, Job, the first tabernacle and temple, a thorough telling of John the Baptist, a detailed account of how Peter and Andrew became followers of Jesus, a thorough retelling of many of Jesus' parables (including a great recounting of the parable of the seeds), Jesus healing ten lepers, a detailed account of what happened after Christ's resurrection, and a brief retelling of Revelation (which doesn't discuss horrible things happening, but focuses on the glories of Heaven).

As you read, you'll also find mentions of how, for example, Christ took the place of the Old Testament sacrificial lambs and how Jesus fulfilled so many prophesies. Many other unusual details are included, too. Several made me run to my Bible to double check accuracy, such the mention of the type of food Abraham served the angels.

Each story is told in one to two pages, with questions and answers given afterward. Not all stories are illustrated.

What I Like: This is a more thorough recounting than a great many children's Bibles offer. In fact, I'd say it's only one step down from reading the actual Bible to your child. I also love the overall look of this volume. Each page is printed so it looks like antique parchment paper.

What I Dislike: I'm not a huge fan of the illustrations, by Richard and Frances Hook. They are original to Taylor's old books, but come across as dated to me. They often don't show much detail or action, making them of little interest to younger children.

Overall Rating: Very good.
